What is TerraWay?
The TerraWay road building system has been specially developed for the production of low-binder-content, but high-strength, highly porous, air and water permeable surfaces for roads and paths with low traffic loads.
TerraWay is used for:
- footways, cycle tracks, hiking, trail and cemetery pathways
- car parking spaces
- streetball and other play areas
- school and kindergarten playgrounds
- tree root protectors
- roof terraces
Special preconditions must be met for occasional slow moving heavy traffic. In such cases it is necessary to seek specialist advice from TerraWay technical staff.
The TerraWay surface layer is created by the bonding of suitable hard stone aggregate with the TerraWay binder. The resulting mix is then laid in a similar manner as a normal floor screed.
TerraWay is the solution for many upcoming problems that have arisen or could arise through surface sealing. Due to its large percentage of pores, even heavy precipitation can be absorbed by the surface. Evaporation can take place at any time and leads to noticeable improved microclimate in cities, while at the same time acting as a countermeasures to global warming though its evaporation cooling.
How does TerraWay function?
Through the TerraWay surfaces precipitation water is passed directly to the sub strata, where, depending on the subsoil, it seeps away immediately or with a certain delay. In general, the TerraWay covering leads to an easing of the drainage situation. Either the water seeps away, or the delay in draining causes an easing in the rain water peaks in the drainage systems and drainage canals, and thus to a reduction of the risk of flooding.
Properties of TerraWay surface
- dense surface without sealing
- water and air permeable
- natural colouring
- frost resistant with long service life
- low frictional resistance, yet high grip
- abrasion-resistant and waterproof
- easy to service, easy to repair
- natural appearance due to the use of local types of sand
- non-toxic, no washing out to be feared
Through the use of different washed hard stone aggregates in form and colour, many design options can be realised. It must be remembered that these are batch mixtures, and that variations in colour can occur.
Through the moulding capacity of TerraWay surfaces, it is also possible to produce surfaces suitable for handicapped persons without steps using gradients up to 45o and more.
The TerraWay System
The Load-carrying capacity of the TerraWay surface layer naturally depends to a large extent on the load-carrying capacity values of the substructure. Here the old road construction saying still applies, namely that a surface layer is only as good as its substructure.
The TerraWay surface passes precipitation water into the substrata in a similar way to a pure macadam surface. This is why a rethink is required. The deliberate passing of water into the bearing layer and frost protection layer demands particularly careful and coordinated planning. As a simple general rule, the building regulations in accordance with relevant national standards must always be complied with.
Depending on the areas of application it may be possible to omit edge constraints and dewatering systems.
Our area partner will advise and install the system for you.
The hardened TerraWay surface is graded as ZO according to LAGA (State grouping for the assessment of waste disposal) and can be installed without restriction.
Preparation and Installation
The success and also the satisfaction of the customer with the TerraWay system depends on the quality of the installation and the rigid adherence to the recommended mix proportions.
Accordingly only trained personnel and certified specialist companies are permitted to install the TerraWay System.
