Gutjahr Systemtechnik is a leading manufacturer of reliable drainage, ventilation and flooring decoupling systems for balconies, terraces and interior applications. Since its establishment in 1989, it has concentrated on developing practical solutions that ensure easy installation and lasting protection of floor surfaces. With a range of more than 300 products, Gutjahr has recorded consistent growth in Germany as well as in a host of neighbouring European countries.

Walter Gutjahr, the company founder, laid the foundation for this success in the nineteen-eighties. Through his experience as a master tile layer and building expert for the Cologne Chamber of Handicrafts, he knew just how easily balconies and terraces fall victim to negative influences that damage both their substance and appearance. Reacting to the situation, he applied for a patent for the forerunner of today’s successful product AquaDrain FE+. That was the birth of the first capillary breaking drain mat that is easy to install and provides lasting protection of ceramic surfaces. In 2002, the system for capillary breaking drainage was included in the new leaflet for outdoor surfacing of the Zentralverband des Deutschen Baugewerbes (ZDB) (Central Federation for the German Building Trade).

About the Products
Gutjahr Systemtechnik provides systems for three areas of application, including drainage systems for terraces, balconies and floors of parking levels, which drain, ventilate and decouple, while, at the same time, serving as substrates for fixed and floating floor surfaces. Also indoors, where Watec 2E offers ceramic surfaces long-lasting protection by providing decoupling and ventilation. And finally, Gutjahr’s drainage mat systems, such as AquaDrain BF, for standard low door thresholds and non-elevated transitions on balconies and terraces.

Drainage system prevents damage to exterior stairs
Exterior stairs are subject to the same weather conditions as balcony and terrace surfaces. Water infiltrating via the joints will cause frost damage, efflorescence and stubborn damp stains. Gutjahr’s AquaDrain SD stair drainage system prevents back-up moisture and damage to exterior stairs. Another advantage: there is no need to cut the drainage mats for the stairs to size, which will save installation time and costs.

AquaDrain SD are pre-formed angled elements with a factory-laminated special fleece, which are laid directly on to the stairs. The ceramic or natural stone covering is then installed on top. Since the entire surface area is elevated, a defined drainage cavity is formed which ensures that leakage water runs off rapidly via the drainage channels. Efflorescence and frost damage are thus effectively prevented. Water drainage capacity and surface drying speeds are significantly improved when AquaDrain SD is used in conjunction with single-sized aggregate mortar.

Water guidance edging
A water guidance edging strip prevents ugly lime deposits on stair stringers caused by water seepage. The AquaDrain SD edging is made from extruded hard foam and is glued to the lateral edges of the rungs and raisers using a suitable slurry-type seal coating.

AquaDrain SD can easily be combined with AquaDrain surface drainage systems for balcony and terrace coverings. When low heights are required, for example in renovation projects, surfaces from 25 mm overall height including tiles can be installed in combination with the reinforced thin-layer draining system Watec4E.

Gutjahr offers a 6-year warranty for the stair drainage system to specialist installers.
