Modular Vertical Garden System by Johannes Brand Designs

Johannes Brand has been working as a freelance designer and goldsmith since 1984. In addition to these two professional fields, he has a wide range of interests and is always looking for solutions to the challenges facing our society. "For some time now, i've been keen to make urban spaces grenner," he says. "That's why i've developed a modular vertical garden system, which i'm presenting at the GaLaBau trade fair. With this system, users can move beds and thus greenery from the horizontal to the vertical."

Johannes Brand is a lateral entrant into the field of gardening and landscaping. He studied music, completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and then became a master goldsmith. He attended a drawing academy and studied art and design at a university of applied sciences. Johannes Brand lives in Königswinter near Bonn and in various places in Italy. In addition to listening to music and playing the piano, his hobbies include road cycling and travelling by bike.

Johannes Brand has channelled his own experience into the development of his greening system. He explains: "When I started renovating a 300-year-old house in the centre of Königswinter six years ago, I came up with the idea of a vertical garden. There is a sealed backyard on the property that is surrounded by walls. The area was unsealed and the walls were greened with my system."
The system developed by Johannes Brand is suitable for greening existing walls. "It's as easy to understand and as simple to set up as Ikea furniture," he emphasises. "The basic structure is a grid in which different compartments can be arranged and planted, just like on a shelf. I use powder-coated aluminium, which is light and durable. It can also be painted in any colour that customers want. It is also possible to install an automatic irrigation system to supply the plants."

Johannes Brand Design is one of the exhibitors at the joint stand for young innovative companies. This is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) and is aimed at newcomers and start-ups from Germany. At GaLaBau, Leading International Trade Fair for Urban Green and Open Spaces (www.galabau-messe.com), from 14 to 17 September 2022, over 20 companies will be exhibiting in Hall 3C.
