Berthold Adler is convinced: Vertical greening should receive more attention. He is the CEO of the company Biolit Green Systems in Essen. In an interview, he explains the benefits of his company’s greening system that consists of individual planting stones.

“Our planting stones are made of a specially developed, non-combustible, mineral-based material that stores and transports liquid,” Berthold Adler explains. “The stones have been developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute and we have obtained a patent for it.” He adds: “The planting stones can be installed to form walls, with the irrigation lines laid directly in the wall, where they are well protected. Via different modules and sensors, the irrigation system can be turned into a smart system.”

After the wall has been built up, the planting troughs are filled with substrate and then with plants or plant seeds. You can use lots of different substrates and plants that fit to the desired type of greening. Thanks to its modularity, the greening system is flexible and scalable. For this reason, the product can be customised very well to the needs and requirements of the respective project. This makes it easy to integrate vertical greening into different architectural and landscape designs, thus ensuring effective and flexible utilisation of the available space.

When asked about the advantages of his greening systems, Berthold Adler names several aspects: “The evaporation of the plants creates a natural cooling effect in otherwise heated urban environments. At the same time, the air quality is improved through oxygen production and CO2 sequestration. Plus, green walls by Biolit can help reduce sound levels in urban areas.”

Berthold Adler is the inventor of these plant stones. He has a degree in process engineering and has also developed other environmentally relevant products. His passion for innovative greening solutions drives him to lead the company and unlock new markets. Presenting his company at the trade fair in Nuremberg, Berthold Adler hopes, will bring new international contacts: “We are hoping for more licence holders in many European countries.”

Biolit Green Systems is one of the exhibitors at the joint stand of the International StartUp Area. This area is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and can be found in Hall 3C. NürnbergMesse offers companies in the International StartUp Area special conditions for participating in GaLaBau, the leading International Trade Fair for Urban Green and Open Spaces (www.galabau-messe.com/en). The fair takes place from 11 – 14 September 2024.
