The Association of German Garden Architects was founded in 1913. It changed its name to Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten bdla in 1972. Today, the bdla has around 2200 members in its 13 regional associations, including around 800 freelance landscape architects. It sees itself as the mouthpiece for self-employed, salaried and civil servant landscape architects and for young professionals.

The association is in dialogue with politics, administration, business and the public. The bdla represents the interests of the profession and contributes its expertise, for example, to legislative projects relevant to construction and planning.
